Lomai slams Wigmen’s late hits on Boas

FORMER SP Hunters enforcer Timothy Lomai has condemned the late hits by Hela Wigmen forwards on his former teammate and Port Moresby Vipers playmaker, Ase Boas, in Sunday’s Digicel Cup minor semifinal.
Lomai, who played with Boas in the Kumuls’ 2016 Pacific Test win over Fiji, agreed that clean hits on playmakers were part of rugby league but said what Wigmen did to the Vipers No.6 in their 12-8 minor semifinal win over the capital city team was intentional.
The 28-year-old took to social media to express his disgust at the targeting of Boas which led to two separate brawls between players from both sides.
“I don’t mind clean contact that can put me on a stretcher or spew my lungs out,” Lomai posted on his Facebook account on Sunday.
“But something that is done intentionally to harm someone is totally not on.
“We should have respect for our senior players who have represented our country at highest level.
“Our poor attitude and ill-discipline will not make us better footballers.”
Lomai said players like Boas were the cream of Papua New Guinea rugby league and were valuable assets for their clubs and the competition.
He said anyone taking on a premier playmaker wanted to test themselves against the best and that was commendable so long as it was done fairly and following the rules.
“It should always be an honour playing alongside or against such players.
“You will learn from them when you go up the ranks.”
He said the Digicel Cup was a better competition because players like Boas were in it.
“When you play against him, be a man and give a fair challenge and try to outplay him in the game so that you can be recognised too.”
PNG Kumul and Vipers centre Stargroth Amean also shared similar sentiments about Boas.

  • Very well stated, as a league fan, the action against Boas shows no sportsmanship at all…….outplay Boas with your skills and not in this manner,

    Rugby league fan.

  • League fans love to see hard, clean & fair contacts – thats more entertaining and this is what gets spectators up and out of their seats.
Outplay your opponent with skill and talent – and not by showing off your strength and aggressive dirt.
Remember this is a playing field for players and not a battle field for warriors

  • The Wigmen player/s should be suspended and disciplined accordingly. PNGNRL need to closely monitor those Wigmen players in their game with Gurias this weekend and must take drastic actions and huge impose club fines on players who show caveman hunting type football. You can’t hit a player without the ball just because you want to show your strength and muscle. Spectators want to see your skills and stamina not car I’ll discipline and crash crash catch-up footy.

  • Thankyou Mr Lomai for your concern of Ase Boas.
Yes it was deliberate move to put him off and and that’s not on.
I mean if the coach told his players to out Ase if then the coach is a fool but I dont think such person like Mr Wabo can do such things like this considering a international player himself.
The referee too should put them on report so they can suspend them and not take part in the next game.
Ase my officer you ste a true champion if the game and that idiot who hit you will never be like you.

  • PNGRFL should now consider ban over players for foul plays like this. Do like NRL does to their players. If its too heavy you miss games if its light pay fine. With that, we will see some improvement in the game. Players will be afraid of suspended and they will play better and fair.
