VALLEY Hunters captain James Lumaris led his team to a 17-6 victory over Nova in their round 9 Capital Rugby Union fixture over the weekend at Bava Park, Port Moresby.
Lumaris crossed for a try and the mid-fielder was in amongst the thick of things calling the shots and helping direct play for his side.
The Hunters dominated the field position and managed to counter effectively enough Nova’s surges.
Valley recorded two five-pointers off their quick rucking work as well as the momentum gained from Nova’s ill discipline.
Nova managed to get on the board via a pair of penalties to trail 10-6 at halftime.
The Hunters defended stoutly in the second 40 minutes but they did miss several try-scoring opportunities which is something the would want to get right when they face the top sides.
“I’m proud of the boys and this performance. Though we had many chances to score we did not,” Lumaris said.
“Being an experienced player, I had to put in an effort to help the boys to step up.
“We had too many dropped balls and gave penalties at the ruck, but we’re a young team and hopefully we improve and keep the pace.”
The Pukpuk centre said the club was moving in the right direction this season but they needed to be consistent.
The Hunters are in fourth place and hoping to maintain that form heading into the second half of the season. Valley Hunters 17 (James Lumaris, Jonah Tokiong, Mulosi Ila tries; Mhustapha Lira con) Nova 6 (Ope Keuke 2 pen).
