THE Lutheran University was established to empower communities, a church leader says.
“The launching of the university was a milestone achieved by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELCPNG),” Bishop Dr Jack Urame said at the launch of the university on Thursday in Lae, Morobe.
Urame said the university’s motto was to empower communities through higher learning.
“Empower means you must give back to your society,” he said.
“The goal of education is not to grow you from your own foundations and not take you away from your own society, community and your nation.”
Urame said education was about empowering and giving back knowledge to the communities; contributing toward the development of society and country.
He said the university could be considered as the contribution from ELCPNG to the country.
“The Lutheran Church of PNG has contributed to the development of this country in many ways and this is one of them.”
Urame declared the university open to all denominations.
