M3 Bulldogs halted Giburi Raiders’ unbeaten run in Pool A with a 10-6 win in round seven of the Morata Offseason Rugby League competition in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The National Capital District Commission is the major sponsor of the competition which is aimed at keeping Morata and Waigani youths occupied throughout the offseason. Last season, the league was sponsored by Motor Vehicles Insurance Ltd.
Despite the loss, the Raiders still lead Pool A.
The win keeps the Bulldogs in contention for the top-six playoffs with four matches remaining.
The Bulldogs scored two tries through hooker Jack John and winger Robert Jerry, and centre Wilo Jim converted one goal.
The Raiders’ consolation try came from centre Junior Manda and fullback Nelson James slotted a penalty goal.
The Bulldogs led 6-2 at halftime, thanks to John’s converted try. The Raiders’ only first-half points came from the penalty goal. In the second half, the Bulldogs scored an unconverted try through Jerry and Manda crossed over for the Raiders.
John played a blinder and directed the Bulldogs’ attack well, leaving the opposition on the back foot.
His opposite Joshua Mark had a fair amount of possession but his combinations in the spine were largely ineffective.
