M4M Bulldogs are the new leaders in the Popondetta rugby league competition after beating Sangi Hawks 10-8 in round two on Sunday.

The Dogs’ classic football paid dividends as they tamed the Hawks in a close and thrilling affair.

The packed crowd were on their toes whenever the Bulldogs were in possession.

The Dogs opening try came from former rugged Mendi Muruk George Abba in the ninth minute on the far side of the paddock. Menson Gawor converted for a 6-0 lead.

The Hawks retaliated in the 15th minute through a grubber kick from Sammy Boroba, who put the fresh man from the bench Lupson Obedi to touch down. Boroba then converted to tie the game.

Just before the half time, the Dogs were penalised for a high tackle and the Hawks took full advantage to kick the penalty and lead 8-6.

In the second stanza, the Bulldogs put up a strong defence and displayed some classy ball work.

Skipper Samuel Keko led by example to maintain a good defensive line.

The Hawks tried all avenues to fly in for more points but were kept closed in the centre of the field.

Just before the final hooter, Gawor picked up a loose ball on his 10 metre line and dashed 90 metres before diving to score the winning try.

For his individual efforts he was awarded the man-of-the-match.

In Under-19 matches Medics stopped the HOPPL Tigers 4-0, and the Bulldogs and Sangi Hawks played to a scoreless draw.

In the reserve grade, HOPPL Tigers stopped Medics 4-0 and Sangi Hawks tamed the Bulldogs 8-4. Medics beat the HOP Tigers 14-12 in the senior match. After round 2, the points ladder is: Bulldogs 4, Hawks 2, Medics 2 and HOP Tiger 0.
