MADANG Governor Peter Yama plans to extend government services to Long and Bagbag islands.
Yama said plans were underway to establish a girls’ boarding school at Bagbag and a technical vocational school on Long Island.
He said Bagbag Island near Karkar Island in Sumkar was isolated from any other outside influences and girls send to school there would focus on their studies only.
Yama said the school could be managed by a church agency because churches manage schools better.
“We can fund and let either SDA, Catholic or other experienced church organisation to run the school,” he said.
Yama said Bagbag Island also needs more government services and establishing institutions like schools would bring other government service.
Yama said Long Island in Raicoast would house a technical vocational school.
He said vocational schools were important because it gives second to students who could not continue their education in secondary or universities.
Yama said Madang needed more vocational schools to cater for drop outs every year.
He said establishing big boarding schools in remote districts would bring other developments in to those isolated area to benefit a wider community.
“So Bagbag and Long Island drifting lonely out there will have some major improvements when plans area finalised,” Yama said.
