MADANG Governor Peter Yama has invited France to establish a naval base in Madang.
Yama made the invitation through France Ambassador Philippe Janvier Kamiyama when he visited Madang on Monday.
Kamiyama was in Madang to welcome the French naval frigate Vendémiaire which visited Madang at the weekend. He said he would pass on the invitation to the French government.
“If they give you the green light you know one place in PNG is Madang,” Yama said.
He said France has investment in various projects in the country and would invest more.
Meanwhile, Vendémiaire commander Jerome Henry said the frigate was on regular patrol duty in the Pacific and Madang was its first port of call.
The purpose of the visit is to exchange information and improve cooperation between Papua New Guinea and France.
Henry said the last time Vendémiaire visited the country was in 2015. Vendémiaire left Madang yesterday for Port Moresby.
