POLICE shot, wounded and captured a suspected robbery gang leader in Madang on Saturday, Madang commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang says.
“The suspect, wanted for a string of armed robberies in the province, was involved in a shootout with police on Naru Mountain on May 18, 2020,” he added.
Rubiang said the suspect was the front man who fired the first shot at the police who tried to arrest him and more than 20 others who were all armed with guns and other offensive weapons.
“The suspect is wanted for robberies along the highway from Madang to Lae and the Highlands provinces since 2016,” he said.
“The suspect had been seen with Madang-based criminals in most of the robberies along the highway that targeted buses and other vehicles.
“He had also provided refuge to criminals from other provinces and Madang.”
Rubiang said the armed suspect was about to commit a robbery when he was sighted by police who shot and wounded him.
“He was sent to Modilon General Hospital but escaped and was recaptured by Walium police while he was on his way to Ramu,” added.
“He will be charged accordingly for his crimes.”
