Madang Urban local level government has invested K100,000 for town clean-up and security during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Town Mayor Joe Yama said 70 youths were engaged to work during the festive season to stop street selling, keep eye on petty crimes and clean the town.
Yama said two youth groups included in the operation would be cleaning up the Modilon Road along the beach front.
“I appeal to the people to look after yourselves and your town this Christmas,” he said, urging them to play their part in controlling rubbish.
“Throwing one plastic bag contributes a lot so please help keep our town clean this Christmas,” he said.
Ward one councillor Steven Sul Mond, who contributed K10,000 from his ward account for the programme, said more than 100,000 people would frequent the town’s central business centre to do shopping for Christmas.
He said the programme was to provide extra security and cleanliness during the festive season to ensure people celebrate Christmas peacefully.
Meanwhile, Yama had apologised to the town residents for not having water in town.
“Water is running very slowly in some areas and some not so I am so sorry if your Christmas will not come good because of no water,” Yama said.
He said town authorities including the provincial government and administration were meeting with Water PNG to ensure water flows this Christmas.
“We will try our best to do our end of the negotiation with Water PNG but need your cooperation to remain calm while Water PNG working to restore water,” Yama said.
“I also appeal to the people not to temper with pipes and let water pressure build up so that it could supply the whole town in time.”
