MADANG’S Modilon Hospital recorded delivering its first New Year baby at 12.01am yesterday, hospital records show.
Midwife Sr Jennifer Wakon took a break from attending to a woman in labour to peep out of the window to see the fireworks at midnight.
She heard the woman’s scream which caught her attention.
Wakon rushed back to assist and saw the baby was crowning.
She delivered the 3.5 kg female at 12.01 am.
Wakon said nurses on duty were so happy that the baby, from Marup village on Karkar Island, arrived just after midnight.
Mother Lorna Olomnda said just as the fire crackers began to make noise, her baby arrived.
“I’m so happy to deliver the first New Year baby this year,” she said.
Wakon said midwives and nurses at the labour ward described the baby as “firecracker baby”.
“The baby arrived with the fire crackers and made us all exited and gave us more reason to celebrate,” she said.
The baby, a boy, from Barum weighing 3kg was delivered at 2.20am.
