MAF pilot was not attacked

Letters, Normal

I WANT to clarify that the people of Karimui did not attack the MAF pilot as reported in The National on July 8.
There was an attack but not on the pilot.
Two Karimui public servants were attacked by frustrated locals when they left the plane.
The locals did not attack the pilot as he is well known to the people and is highly respected.
Karimuians would not do such a foolish thing by attacking pilots who are our only hope to deliver basic goods and services.
We have to rely on air transport since the district was “discovered” as there is no road link to Karimui.
Airline companies and pilots who provide services to remote parts of this country are highly respected and no one will do anything to harm these service providers.
The pilots make a difference in isolated areas and we greatly appreciate them.
The main reason for the attack on the public servants was due to a delay of payments over a contract at Karimui airstrip.
Locals who were engaged had waited for almost a year for their payments.
They vented their frustrations on the two public servants.
We urged those responsible to settle the payment immediately.
