President Andrew Magaiva says interest from across the region has prompted the Kairuku Amateur Boxing Association to name their Dec 26-30 boxing tournament as the Papua Championships.
Magaiva said boxing associations from Central, the National Capital District and Gulf had shown interest to compete in the tournament.
Magaiva said with Central Governor Robert Agarobe’s support, he was expecting a big turnout at the tournament.
“Seeing the interest from Gulf, Central and NCD, I believe that this event will be the biggest tournament Papuans have held and it will require more funding,” Magaiva said.
“I am appealing to all the business houses in Central and Gulf to support this good cause.”
The tournament will be staged at Aipeana village in Mekeo.
Magaiva said seven associations had shown interest to take part in the tournament.
He said men would compete in the 49-81kg division and women 48-75kg.
