A MAGISTRATE in a Committal Court in Waigani, National Capital District, discharged former National Airports Corporation managing director Rex Kiponge from his fraud charges because there was a change in circumstances.
Magistrate Danny Wakikura said there was no point in progressing the matter because the alleged principal offender Sekie Agisa had his case dismissed in the National Court after prosecution had no evidence to provide.
He said pursuing the case was a waste of the court’s time when dismissing the case.
Kiponge said the decision is a relief and gives him time to concentrate on other matters. “I’ve fought this criminal case for one year and four months, and finally justice has been served and I’m very happy.
“At least I can concentrate on other matters,” Kiponge said.
He thanked his lawyer Belinda Poki for her tireless efforts throughout the course of the case.
He also praised the court and legal system saying that its independence serves as the last line of defence for the citizens of the country.
Kiponge was discharged from his charges of one count each of abuse of office, official corruption and conspiracy.
