Major problems at Goroka university

Letters

I BELIEVE the University of Goroka, a vital institution for Papua New Guinea’s future, is failing its students.
The safety and well-being of these young scholars are at grave risk.
The tragic loss of lives and unacceptable living conditions need immediate attention.
In recent years, two students tragically lost their lives to violence in the local communities; the second succumbing to multiple stab wounds only recently.
Several others are admitted at the hospital.
Additionally, numerous physical and sexual assaults have occurred in the past.
These incidents highlight a critical lack of action by authorities to address student safety and implement effective security measures.
The situation is further compounded by inadequate housing.
The condemned high-rise dormitories, damaged by an earthquake, remain partially occupied, with female students residing on the lower floors.
The lack of transparency regarding parental consent for this arrangement and safety assessments is deeply concerning.
Meanwhile, hundreds of male and non-residential female students face challenges in off-campus rentals, often lacking basic amenities such as clean water, sanitation, security, and proper study spaces.
These conditions further expose students to vulnerability.
The recent murders of two male students from Hela and Southern Highlands highlight the dangers they face.
Immediate action is required from the National Government to ensure student safety and well-being.
Install prefabricated units on the vacant university agriculture land to house all residential students. This will not only address safety concerns within the community but also eliminate the risk of injuries or fatalities in the event of another earthquake.
Demolish the condemned dormitories and replace them with earthquake-resistant structures built with quality materials. Reputable construction companies should be engaged to ensure the safety and longevity of these buildings.
Engage health inspectors to assess current student rental accommodations in the surrounding communities. Ensure these residences meet basic standards for clean water, sanitation, security, study areas, and lighting.
Work with landlords to improve existing facilities and explore options for creating more suitable off-campus housing options, if necessary.
The University of Goroka plays a critical role in educating Papua New Guinea’s future leaders.
These students deserve a safe and secure environment to learn and thrive.
The Government must act swiftly and decisively to address these critical issues and ensure the safety of all students at the University of Goroka.
