MAJOR sponsor SP Brewery has backed the Hunters’ relocation to Australia as the company continues its support of the franchise amid the club’s transition into an independent entity.
Brewery managing director Ed Weggemans said the Hunters would receive the company’s full backing for the upcoming Queensland Intrust Super Cup season.
“I know that it’s a drastic move and we wish the best of luck to coach (Matthew) Church and the team,” he said.
“For the brewery, the franchise has been successful and one that we hope to be able to continue into the future.
“Last year was bad for our business due to the impact of government measures to control the spread of the coronavirus.
“Unfortunately, for SP, it had limited our trading ability.
“We had to make drastic cuts in our sponsorship efforts.
“But I’m pleased that we were able to maintain our support for the Hunters.”
Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka said the brewery’s support since the Hunters’ 2013 inception was crucial to the development of the sport in the country.
“The team and the sport has enjoyed the last seven years,” he said.
“The Hunters are not just a team but a flagship brand for the country.
“We are proud to have a flagship brand like SP Brewery behind the team.”
