OIL Search managing director Peter Botten has urged a group of students in Tari, Hela, to make use of the library to assist in their education.
He attended the opening of the Habare Literacy Library in Tari with students, parents, and a delegation from Oil Search. It was built with funding from the Oil Search Foundation.
The early childhood education programme provides an innovative learning environment for 100 children aged between four and six.
Students enrolled in the childhood literacy programme by the Buk Bilong Pikinini use the library to study phonics, speaking and listening exercises, pre-reading and pre-writing – the four building blocks that must be in place for a child to begin a lifetime of literacy.
Botten reminded the students of the importance of early learning.
“Who wants to be managing director of Oil Search? Who wants to be head of the Hela Health Authority? Who wants to be the next Prime Minister of PNG?” he said.
“This library gives you an opportunity to reach your future dream.
“The library gives you an opportunity to read and write, to get an education and to get a good job.”
Librarian Susan Minai said the children were already benefitting.
“When they came, they did not know English. But after three weeks, they can follow instructions in English.
“They can say the words we teach them. It is amazing.”
