Malaysia-PNG relations based on respect, integrity

MALAYSIA and Papua New Guinea have always placed a high premium on the scrupulous observance of inter-state relations, respect for territorial integrity and principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of another country.
The Malaysian High Commission in Port Moresby made this known in a statement as it celebrates its Independence Day today.
“When we look back at the historical relation of Malaysia and Papua New Guinea, we owe a debt of gratitude to our founding fathers who had the vision to envisage cooperation and collaboration between our two countries.
“They put aside the differences and took confidence building measures to promote relations in the Asia-Pacific, focusing on what could be done collectively to improve the well-being of their people.”
It said that Malaysia and PNG’s relations started with a simple business trade and investment and gradually bloomed into a diplomatic relation since 1975.
“From that moment on, both countries embark on the path of accelerating economic, social progress and culture development through deepening and strengthening relations through a step-by-step approach, while moving at a comfort level acceptable to both countries in line with the adherence to universal values and international law.”
It added that Malaysia’s trade surplus in June 2023 registered a double-digit growth of 11.3 per cent year-on-year to RM25.81 billion (about K20 billion).
This was the 38th consecutive month of trade surplus since May 2020, and the highest monthly value ever recorded for the month of June.
In tandem with slower global demand and lower commodity prices, total trade contracted by 16.3 per cent to RM222.14 billion (about K174 billion).
Exports slipped by 14.1 per cent to RM123.98 billion (about K97 billion) and imports decreased by 18.9 per cent to RM98.16 billion (about K76 billion).
The performance was similar to other regional markets for June 2023.
Despite the decline, strong exports were posted for electrical and electronic products, iron and steel products, metalliferous ores and metal scrap, transport equipment as well as processed food.
Every year in August and September, Malaysia celebrates its National Day (Hari Kebangsaan) and Malaysia Day (Hari Malaysia).
Both dates play a significant role in the heart of Malaysians.
Malaysia gained its independence from Britain on Aug 31, 1957.
Sept 16, 1963 marked the formation of Malaysia as an independent, sovereign, democratic, peaceful and harmonious nation.
