A MAN accused of being in possession 553 different calibre of ammunition has been denied bail by the Alotau District Court.
Huong Haw Chin, 62 from Sibu Town, Sarawak City, Malaysia, was denied bail and ordered back into police custody after Senior Magistrate Rebecca Kwayaila heard both Huong’s lawyer and the police prosecutor’s arguments.
From the 9.30am sitting, Magistrate Kwayaila adjourned to 1.30pm where she made the decision to deny bail for Huong.
She ordered all concerned parties to return today for the bail application decision.
During his initial charging of the ammunition, Police Commissioner David Manning told The National that the man was denied bail because there was no provision for bail.
“He was arrested and formally charged for two additional charges for being in possession of 553 assorted ammunitions found in his residence and supermarket Great Jadi Ltd,” Comm Manning said.
“He is charged under Section 65A (a) of Firearms Act. There is no bail because there’s no provision for bail.”
“After Huong had been charged for being in possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition, he was told that he needed to provide necessary documentations or some form of receipts for the big number of ammunitions of different calibres.
“He has to verify and prove that all these big number of ammunitions were genuinely purchased at a recognised licensed firearms/ammunitions dealer.”
“Huong did not return with necessary documentations after he was released on a police cash bail of K5000 by the acting provincial police commander.”
“However on Monday, he returned to the police station with his lawyer, upon police request to confirm that all the firearms and ammunitions with police are his properties confiscated by police.”
