TRAFFIC police should be generating money for the government through the effective enforcement of the motor traffic regulations.
Moresby Northeast MP Andrew Mald said money could be made by enforcing the motor vehicles regulations while at the same time controlling defective vehicles to minimise unnecessary deaths.
He said the police hierarchy should get into doing the basic task of assisting the government by raising funds through the different sections then waiting for the government to funds their operations all the time.
Mald said police traffic officers should be engaged everywhere to charge offenders as there were so many unnecessary deaths resulting from careless and drink driving.
He said such people defying traffic regulations should be arrested and charged and also have their licences forfeited like in other countries.
Mald also said the police should also conduct a proactive task in controlling the traffic jams now being faced by road users in the city by checking on defective vehicles, including lights, brakes as well as the registration numbers.
He said currently, the police road blocks were only interested in the registration numbers while other important elements of the traffic regulations were never considered.
He said the police traffic section should now be out on the streets to control speeding and defective vehicles while other traffic offences could also be looked into in the process so that offenders could be fined to raise revenues for the government.
“They are not doing enough and, as a result, we are seeing a lot of death from careless and reckless driving.
“They are too many traffic jams because of too many vehicles and many of these vehicles are defective and not roadworthy,” he said.
