WEWAK police have arrested and charged a 20-year-old man with the alleged kidnap, attempted murder and rape of a medical officer and his wife outside Wewak, East Sepik last month.
Provincial police commander Insp Charles Parinjo said the suspect, Jojo Ambile of Ambukanjai village, Yangoru, had been formally charged under section 386 (2) of the Criminal Code Act.
Ambile was remanded at the Boram CS awaiting the completion of his court file.
The other 10 suspects, who also allegedly took part in the crime, are known to police but have been moving around making it difficult to make arrests.
However, police are closely monitoring their movement and are confident of making arrests soon.
Police said the couple was returning from Wom village on the west coast of Wewak when they were held up by armed gunmen and taken to a logging road where they were tied up, beaten and assaulted.
Meanwhile, police have renewed their call for vendors to stay away from moving PMVs when they come into Dagua market to off load market produce.
The call came in light of an avoidable accident last Wednesday where a mother was hit by a PMV as she was trying to cling onto a moving PMV to get a glimpse of the cargoes it was carrying.
Parinjo said the recent accident stemmed from pure negligence and the vendors should now realise the importance of waiting until the PMVs come to a halt before they charge at it to find what they could buy.
The injured mother is recovering at the Wewak General Hospital while the driver of the vehicle had been taken in by police for questioning.
