Man arrested over robbery

A MAN who allegedly robbed shop employers and their manager in Namatanai, New Ireland, on Sunday was arrested by police in Kokopo, East New Britain (ENB), on Tuesday, a senior officer says.
ENB police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali said the man had been involved in an armed robbery of Garden Hill supermarket and had fled to East New Britain.
He told The National that the incident occurred between midnight and 1am, and the suspect had been with other 15 accomplices who were armed with homemade guns, bush knives and iron rods, went to the Garden Hill area and attacked the employees who lived there.
Chief Insp Tabali said the suspects got away with K200,000.
“The suspect got his share of the money and escaped to Kokopo by boat, but he was caught by Kokopo police response unit on Tuesday morning when he was seen drinking with his girlfriends on the Kokopo beachfront,” he said.
Police found K10,000 on the suspect, as well as a homemade gun, and Namatanai police confirmed his identity and that he was wanted in relation to the robbery on Sunday night.
