Man builds guest house to relieve travellers

GEORGE Julius, 47, from Widuru ward 5, Labuta LLG in Nawaeb, Morobe, never dreamt of owning a guest house.
But his passion to help others resulted in him building a guest house to help more people from Finschhafen and Tewae-Siassi who sometimes could not make it home because of weather conditions and other reasons.
Julius is married to Lucy and they have six children and started building Gawasang Guest House in 2018.
It was completed last year.
The guesthouse has six rooms and a conference room which can cater for up to 30 people.
The guest house was opened by Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge and Bulolo MP Sam Basil last week.
“I’m yet to put on the finishing touches as I am financially down,” Julius said.
“After helping many boats and passengers who travel to and from Lae and could not reach their destinations when the weather was bad, I decided to build this guest house.
“I built it so they could come and transit here because we helped a lot of them during bad weather and had to let them sleep in our family house.
“Almost all materials used in building the house were sourced locally. We broke down along the way while building this guesthouse but we never gave up.”
Julius said his first guests were village court magistrates from Nawaeb who used the facility to conduct a workshop when the guest house was still under construction.
“This helped me with some money and I completed the guest house,” he said
“I am also thinking of setting up a centre here to help women with cancer who faced difficulties travelling to Lae for checks and medication.”
