A 27-YEAR-OLD man was jailed for a year with hard labour by the Boroko District Court for having a hand grenade in front of a Government building in Port Moresby.
Magistrate Kari Poawai sentenced Fuksy Jack, from Henganofi’s Niaguna village, Eastern Highlands, after he pleaded guilty.
Police prosecutor Snr Const Mol Siboa said a custodial term should be imposed rather than a monetary fine.
He said the maximum penalty was a four-year sentence and a fine of K4,000.
Magistrate Poawai said it was a serious offence although it was under the Summary Offence because the weapon was a bomb.
“The weapon poses threat because the handler (Jack) was not trained to carry such weapon in public,” he said.
Jack will serve his term in Bomana Prison.
On June 22, between 11am and 1pm, Jack was at the Lands Department car park in Port Moresby when police received a tip off and seized a live olive green and red band hand grenade from him.
Police then arrested Jack and brought him to the Sir John Guise Stadium for questioning while waiting for Papua New Guinea Defence Force officials to verify the weapon.
The officials confirmed that it was a M26 L2A1 grenade with high explosives weighing 395g with a length of 84mm.
They confirmed that the hand grenade belonged to their armoury, so they took it for safekeeping.
