ST John Ambulance attended to a multi-casualty accident along the Hiritano Highway after a rain-tree fell on a moving vehicle last week.
An initial casualty count had reported seven people injured and were taken to the Agivairu aid post for treatment.
Unfortunately, one man died after he suffered severe head injuries resulting from the impact of the tree falling on the vehicle.
St John Ambulance was called to the scene to assess, stabilise and transport three patients with serious injuries and a suspected spinal injury.
It is unclear what had caused the tree to fall.
“Accidents are unpredictable and it is a matter of life and death when ambulances have to drive long distances for emergency cases like this,” chief executive officer Matt Cannon said.
“Our ambulances crews drive to make it in due course and try to save as many patients’ lives as we possibly can.
“In Central, St John goes as far as Bereina and Abau to assist transport patients and respond to emergency cases in rural communities.”
