A MAN from Yangoru, who lived at Yawasoro in Wewak, died on the spot after being hit by a PMV bus that was travelling from Wewak to Tangara on Saturday.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said the intoxicated man was trying to cross the road on his bicycle when he was hit by the bus.
He said the bus driver tried to swerve out of the way but could not do so in time and hit the man.
The force threw the man into a nearby drain.
Supt Beli said the bus was carrying passengers from town and was headed for Tangara at the time of the accident.
The body of the deceased was taken to the hospital morgue and traffic police officers were on the scene.
Supt Beli said the vehicle was checked by police and was released back to the owner.
He said traffic officers were still investigating the accident.
Supt Beli commended the relatives of the deceased for letting the law and due process take place.
“The driver of the PMV bus is still on the run so we are calling on him to come to the police station and allow us to do our jobs and he can defend himself in court,” Supt Beli said.
He also called on the people to observe the state of emergency declared by the Government and remain in their homes and to start doing something productive.

  • Please do not blame the PMV driver. Blame the bicycle rider and the grog. Families of the deceased can blame the alcohol.

  • Drunk and on a bicycle? The driver cannot be blamed for the accident. Don’t drink and drive also applies to motorbikes and bicycles.

  • That’s call suicide. Driving a PMV bus without Licence and registration or ridding a motor bike or Bicycle without helmet is also illegal. The worse case scenario is ridding a bike without helmet under the influence of alcohol is a bridge of traffic laws. Innocent PMV driver cannot be blamed for the careless person’s death. Anyway sorry for the loss to family of the deceased.
