A 26-YEAR-OLD man charged with attempted murder was granted K1,000 bail by the Waigani Committal Court on Tuesday.
Lawyer David Kayok from the Public Solicitor’s office applied for bail on the grounds that Stanley Makawa was innocent, wrongly arrested and charged by his relatives who had some issues and made him a scapegoat.
He said Makawa wished to be released on bail so that he could give proper instructions to lawyers as he was presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The alleged murder attempt occurred between 10pm and 11pm on July 6 at Erima’s Wildlife, Port Moresby.
Makawa had approached Lai Melepa and asked assistance which he promised to repay later that day.
Melepa waited for him to repay but it was getting late. So he confronted Makawa at about 10pm.
Makawa was playing cards and drinking beer.
Melepa asked him to repay him but he refused and ignored him.
Makawa got up and without any argument allegedly stabbed Melepa with a screw driver.
He fled.
Melepa collapsed.
Bidar adjourned hearing to Oct 8.
