A 42-YEAR-OLD man was jailed nine months with hard labour by the Goroka District Court for escaping from police custody in 2018.
Goroka District Court magistrate Gerard Vetunawa found Enos Kay Kukudame, from Okapa’s Mike village, Eastern Highlands, guilty of escaping from the Goroka police lock-up while awaiting trial in the National Court for cheating.
He allegedly obtained money from different people on the pretext of buying provincial government vehicles impounded in 2018 from illegal users.
According to police investigations, when Kukudame failed to deliver his promise, the people lodged police report.
While in custody, Kukudame escaped from the lock-up with a group of drunkards who were temporarily detained in the cell.
Kukudame was recaptured in Goroka town’s Paragon compound
