A MAN has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his part in a burglary in August last year in East New Britain.
Acting judge Justice David Susame told Depsey Robin Kiudu, 28, that he had played a big role in the offence which warranted the death penalty.
“You played a very major role in this offence. You guided and led the burglars to the complainant’s residence in the very early hours of the morning when the family was fast asleep,” he said. “The offence of burglary carries the maximum penalty of a death sentence.”
Kiudu, from Tavui in Kokopo, pleaded guilty to the charge.
Justice Susame allowed a discount of one year for the guilty plea, plus the time spent in custody.
The court heard that on Aug 28 last year, Kiudu and three relatives had hitched a ride on a truck carrying copra driven by Toiki Wate.
Later that night, Kiudu was woken up by a group of men who wanted him to guide them to Wate’s home. He did so and acted as a guard while the armed men forced their way into the house and stole K26,000, a K1500 phone, a chainsaw and a bush knife. They also took the K4000 in the truck being the fares collected.
