A MAN who attempted to kill his brother-in-law with a bush knife in Port Moresby has received a six-year jail sentence.
Acting Judge Tracy Ganaii issued the sentence against Jeffery Onda 38, of Keta village in Dei, Western Highlands, at the National Court in Waigani on Tuesday.
Justice Ganaii suspended Onda’s six-year jail term and placed him on a good behaviour bond taking into account that Onda and the victim, Peter Kiap, related through marriage.
The court ordered Onda to pay K5,000 as compensation to Kiap within three months.
Justice Ganaii warned Onda that failure to comply with the conditions would result in him serving the six-year jail term.
Onda’s other conditions included 600 hours of community service and keeping the peace with Kiap.
The court heard that on Feb 2, 2019, at around 9.30pm Kiap and his family were at their home at 9-Mile in Port Moresby when Onda and two others came to the house.
Onda entered Kiap’s property armed with a bush knife. Once in the premises they shouted for Kiap and broke the windows of his vehicle.
Kiap confronted Onda and was attacked. Onda slashed Kiap’s left arm and fled with the other men.
