A POST-MORTEM has claimed that a man who died on Lihir, New Ireland, was killed by a police-issued 5.56 rifle.
The death of the man early on Thursday, April 1, sparked a confrontation between settlers and police, leading to the death of a second man.
New Ireland police commander Chief Insp Maurice Itoro told The National that the post-mortem was complete and it found that the assault of the first victim included a hit to the head with an object.
“The post-mortem was conducted, police investigators and myself sitting in for the post-mortem, the results revealed that the man was hit and then shot,” he said.
“The injuries from the initial hit to his head show blunt force trauma to the head.
“The shot was fired at close range and entered the back of his head and exited from his chest,” Chief Insp Itoro said.

  • We must have a police academe which all our grade Universities, College and grade 12 students can apply. So many unnecessary deaths from our own policeman which they completed their training and made an Orth to protect every citizen of PNG. The kind of actions which our police force are acting are against the Orth which they swore in front of the Bible. Some officers are spoiling the image and department of our own trusted forces.

  • CREATE a psychological unit for the RPNGC.
CUT down the length of deployment to a maximum of 30 days per tasking.
