A MAN died and three were wounded after a failed attempt to steal a vehicle from a foreigner and his family at Koki Fish Market in Port Moresby on Tuesday, police said.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said the four allegedly approached a Chinese man, married to a local woman and who was in the vehicle waiting for his wife to buy fish at the market, pointed a home-made gun and ordered him to step out.
Another suspect opened the passenger’s seat door and pointed the gun when a bystander saw what was happening when he threw a stone at the suspect’s head, who lost control and fell.
According to police, the victim ran into the market while the crowd retaliated by throwing stones at the suspects who had already made their way into the vehicle and were trying to drive out when police arrived.
Shots were fired in an exchange and one of the suspects was killed and others wounded.
N’dranou said police were trained to protect and serve the public and that was what they did.
“Thank the public at Koki and security guards at the market for responding and helping prevent a crime from taking place,” he said.
He said it is also a good indication that the public were tired and frustrated with criminals and were cooperating with police.
Suspects are yet to be identified.
