A HUNGRY 24-year-old man pleaded guilty to beating his wife who refused to give him matches to light a fire for cooking.
John Apu, from Nipa/Kutubu’s Kuare village in Southern Highlands, assaulted Magaret Nopi in Kunai compound within Hagen City on Tuesday night.
Apu was arrested and charged with assault under the Family Protection Act on Friday and District Court magistrate Lydia Karre reserved sentencing until Wednesday.
Police investigations revealed that Apu returned home hungry at 7pm and asked his wife to give him matches to light a fire for cooking.
Nopi refused and an angry Apu started punching and kicking her.
Nopi lodged a report the same night and police arrested Apu.
Nopi told the court that she married Apu five years ago and that he had been beating her up regularly.
“In one attack, he punched me in the mouth, causing a deep cut on my lips,” she added.
Apu pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife.
“I am sorry to the court and my wife. Please have mercy on me,” Apu pleaded.
Karre ordered Apu to be remanded in the police cell until Wednesday when she would deliver a sentence.
