A MAN was shot dead and another seriously injured by security guards after a group of men entered a store in Lae on Sunday and made off with about K5,000, police say.
Lae acting Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban said seven armed men entered a store operated by a Bangladeshi at Bumayong.
“The suspects held up the shop occupants with homemade guns and took money. During the robbery the suspects were spotted by security guards and gun shots were exchanged between them,” Kunyanban said.
He said during the shootout a suspect was killed while his accomplices fled into the nearby settlement. The robbers left their homemade guns at the scene. A second suspect was caught by the security guards and shop owner and beaten up.
Kunyanban said according to police investigations most of the suspects lived around LBM compound (settlement) near the Second Seven Dump area and were believed to from Kabwum, Morobe.
He said none of the shop’s employees or security guards were injured during the shootout. Police arrived minutes after the incident.
