A man who escaped from a police cell has been has been jailed for six months.
Provincial police commander Superintendent Michael Welly told The National that the accused, Yew Sing Tiong, was originally charged with misappropriation and detained in the police cells in Popondetta. Welly said while being detained, he escaped with the help of someone and was at the Girua Airport about to board a flight when police arrested him.
“The police got a tip-off that he was at the airport so they went and found him hiding in the toilet,” Welly said. “Tiong was then charged with escaping from lawful custody but his first charge of misappropriation was dismissed due to lack of evidence.”
Welly said Tiong, while working for a firm in Popondetta, was arrested and charged with misappropriation.
Jail commander Teddy Beaga confirmed that Tiong imprisoned at Biru jail.
Northern Governor Gary Juffa commended police for their good work.
Juffa said it was high time relevant agencies including Labour, Migration, Customs and police came together and started doing a thorough sweep of the provinces.
“We still have an outstanding issue,” Juffa said.
“We have reported to Labour and Immigration the prevalence of a number of illegal workers months ago and nothing has been done on our report.”
