POLICE Commissioner David Manning opened a three-day meeting for law and order impacted provinces in Port Moresby on Monday.
The workshop is being attended by the provincial police commanders (PPCs) of provinces which have, over the years, experienced serious law and order challenges, according to Manning.
The PPCs present were from Hela, Southern Highlands, Enga, Western Highlands, Madang, West New Britain, Milne Bay, Oro, and two Metropolitan commanders for Lae and NCD.
Also in attendance were directors from Police headquarters in Konedobu.
Manning said central to police work was the prevention of crime.
He said that for prevention to be effective the PPCs needed to be proactive and have in place a robust community engagement programme.
He said PPCs needed to have adequate operational and logistical information about their command and know their provinces in order to address law and order challenges.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Operations Donald Yamasombi tasked each PPC to provide a supplementary operation order together with a six-month operational budget, a status report of police assets, manpower and resources within their commands as well as crime statistics for 2019.
