THE managers of the 12 local-level governments (LLGs) of Manus province have been assigned to coordinate the week-long 2010 national census in their areas commencing July 11.
Provincial census coordinator George Polon said conducting the census was expensive, complex and a difficult exercise.
“The managers will be working with the Provincial Steering Committee (PSC), National Statistics Office (NSO) and the communities,” he said.
In preparation for the census, Mr Polon said the managers would update the listing, identify and create new census units.
The 2000 census showed Manus had a total population of 43,387 people and 8,812 households.
Mr Polon said from the time PNG had its full census in 1980, the population increased from 3.1 million to 5.1 million in 2000.
He appealed to LLG managers and ward councillors to respond in whatever they could offer to ensure the success of the census.
The following census instruments have already being developed:
* Household listing and census unit register updating manuals;
* Census interviewer and supervisor manuals; and
* 2010 questionnaire proposal.
