A 41-year-old Iranian refugee in Manus has been arrested and charged with damaging property and using abusive language against his wife, a local woman, police say.
Manus police commander chief inspector David Yapu said the suspect was identified as Ali Reza Razmi Zirakan.
Yapu said the refugee had been drinking and insulted his wife and damaged their properties at home.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at Katen Tingou upper ward five in Lorengau town.
Yapu said Zirakan’s wife was offended by the abuse and reported the matter to police.
Yapu warned refugees who were married to local women to have respect for their spouses and other people in the community and
abide by the laws of Papua New Guinea.
“They should not be abusing them because they chose to marry these locals, otherwise, they will face full force of the law,” he said.
