PRIME Minister James Marape wants public servants to be thrifty and invest in home ownership.
He yesterday attended the Department of Prime Minister and National Executive Council launching of the Operational Housing Policy and Plan of Action for 2019 to 2023.
He told public servants to work hard on their housing programme.
“Our Government is not about free handouts for citizens.
“We want citizens to work hard and we will create facilities and avenues for people to enjoy,” he said.
“The sweat equity they all contribute to will go a long way in earning them their homes.”
He said he was talking to the “most educated Papua New Guineans working in the highest office, the Prime Ministers’ office” who “should be the wisest”.
“Eliminate the waste and invest properly in your house, education, business, small to medium enterprises,” he said.
“You can do well with the resources that God has given you instead of dreaming about magic money in gambling.” He said the country had been held to ransom by complacency and corruption.
“Complacency and corruption have been practised by every state agency since 1975,” he said.
“We must start from Prime Minister’s Department. Men with human ingenuity and resolution, commitment and dedication can resolve even the hardest,” he said.
“Where you are placed today is a designation God has given you to make your mark.
“Eliminate complacency and earn your salary.”
Marape said the Government will table the Anti-Corruption Bill and the Whistleblowers Bill in Parliament next year.
