Maritime authority eyes standards

THE National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) aims to meet the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) standard by taking on board best shipping practices aligned to the new changes.
Manager legal services Trevor Potoura told The National that to prepare for the changes, they organised consultation workshop with stakeholders and government agencies around the country to get feedbacks on the proposed merchant shipping bill 2023.
“The bill was a legal policy targeted at improving the merchant shipping act 1975 legal framework to solve outdated provisions’ issues.”
Potoura said only certain parts of the act would be reviewed.
He explained that NMSA was following the Merchant Shipping Act 1975 and there had been a lot of changes since then.
“As a member of IMO, we (NMSA) are required to comply with the changes.”
Potoura said since the world was changing with new technological inventions, NMSA also need to adapt with those changes.
