YANGORU-Saussia MP Richard Maru is the People First Party’s (PFP) parliamentary leader announced yesterday in Port Moresby.
Registrar of Political Parties Dr Alphonse Gelu confirmed Maru’s membership of PFP last month.
Maru expressed his gratitude to PFP patron Luther Wenge and the executives for accepting him as the parliamentary leader following his resignation from the People’s National Congress (PNC) in January.
Maru was first elected in to parliament in 2012 as an independent candidate, joined PNC and remained with the party until his resignation.
Maru said political parties were essential institutions of democracy.
One of his priorities was to help build PFP as a strong national institution.
“We want to build a vibrant, accountable and inclusive party that offers citizens meaningful choices and opportunities for political participation,” he said.
“PFP will be rebuilt on concrete political ideologies, values and policy platforms that focus on people and their spiritual and physical well-being.
“We welcome Papua New Guineans and leaders to join the institutionalised people first movement.”
Maru said his party would support the Marape Government until next year’s national elections.
