YANGORU-Saussia district, East Sepik, will see a major police operation in two months to clamp down on the brewing and drinking of homebrew.
Local MP and Trade, Commerce and Industry Minister Richard Maru said the police operation would start from Japaraka village near Wewak and end at Wingei in West Yangoru.
“I have noted that widespread consumption of this illegal alcohol has given rise to lawlessness in the district,” Maru told a crowd last week at Yangoru station.
“In order for development to take off in the district we must make the environment conducive and I have no choice but to put money down when district funds are available early next year.
“There are only a minority who are trying to rule this place with bush knives, abuse and harassment of females.
“As long as I am the MP and minister, I will make sure that there is no iron man here,” Maru announced to a loud applause from the crowd. at Yangoru station last week.
“I appeal to you, everyone in the district, to support police by indentifying those who are in the business of brewing this illegal substance so that they are being dealt with,” he said.
“We are declaring war on steam and other lawlessness in the district and I warn those who are involved that their days are numbered because they will be arrested and jailed by police when the operation commences.”
Maru said he would be establishing a permanent mobile squad barracks at Yangoru next year and would improve the existing infrastructure to lure more policemen to Yangoru when district funds were available next year.
He said Yangoru-Saussia would see major developments in education, health, roads, business and almost anything in the next five years as he would ensure police were adequately accommodated.
