PAPUA New Guinea Kumuls coach Michael Marum has back the Sepik Pride to be competitive if they succeed in their bid to join the Digicel Cup next year.
The PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) high performance manager told The National yesterday that the Pride had ample support to thrive in the country’s premier rugby league competition.
“They have very strong support from the likes of former Kumul John Wagambie, their provincial governments and other elites, and I think they definitely can form a competitive side,” Marum said.
“They are very organised and I know they have talents in their provinces so it will be a good opportunity to get that exposure. But they don’t have to rush, they are going down the right track and surely they will get there.”
Marum said PNGRFL and Digicel Cup side Rabaul Gurias were also backing the Pride.
“I will go back to Wewak in the first week of December to conduct coaching clinics,” he said.
“It will be my second time to go there as I already visited the place early in the year.
“It’s good that we are engaging with officials and youths there.
“I believe it will be a good contribution towards their goal of fielding a side in the Digicel Cup.”
Meanwhile, the Sepik Agmark Nines will be held at Pora Oval, Wewak, from Dec 4-6.
The tournament is part of the Gurias’ support towards the Pride’s bid.
Marum will also be there to officiate the tournament.
