Mayor to remove lazy workers

THE newly elected Lae City Mayor James Khay has promised to clamp down on unproductive workers at the Lae Urban local level government (LULLG).
Khay, who was elected unopposed for a third term at the Lae Council Chamber on Wednesday, said he would focus on making the city authority more efficient and effective in carrying out its work and that would mean removing and replacing those who did not contribute.
“These people are costing LULLG and are not performing. They do nothing or very little and get paid which is an unnecessary cost for us,” Khay said.
He said the LULLG needed qualified public servants who could perform their duties efficiently.
“Don’t think that you are a public servant getting paid for doing nothing. I don’t need such people. LULLG needs people who can perform to provide the best for Lae, Morobe and PNG as a whole.”
Khay said the LULLG had a debt of K20 million and it was a management priority to address.
He said an audit of the city authority’s operations would be undertaken.
The mayor said the audit would include information on LULLG’s assets such as land and other property that had been sold.
Khay said questionable deals and those that did not follow proper procedures would be scrutinised.
“I will look at those sales and find out who did what and where the proceedings are from those sales.”
He said any employee of the authority found to have acted criminally would face the law.
