Mead close to Broncos return

VETERAN Papua New Guinea winger David Mead is set to return to Australia after three years in the English Super League to bolster the ranks of the Brisbane Broncos.
A proven try scorer with nearly 100 touchdowns, the 32-year-old is quitting French club Catalans and is close to signing a deal with this year’s National Rugby League wooden spooners.
After starting his career with the Gold Coast Titans in 2016, Mead played one season in Brisbane in 2017, scoring three tries in 12 games.
He has been solid without being spectacular in his time in Super League but the Broncos feel his experience will help their young backline.
Mead is one of the fastest players in the rugby league world and has scored many spectacular tries in his 12 seasons in the big time.
He has played 14 Tests for PNG, where he is regarded as a national hero.
Mead won’t cost the Broncos much in the salary cap and could prove a handy addition to the club’s depth. Broncos coach Kevin Walters confirmed he was in talks with former NRL back David Mead to return from England.
“The Broncos have a history of not losing players that they want and over the last few years again that’s changed a bit,” the 53-year-old Brisbane and Queensland legend said.
“I’m not going to try and bring that back, I’m going to bring it back.
“There was some disconnection between players, coaching staff, the board … sponsors, fans, members and community.
“There has to be a tie-in and unity from everyone at the Broncos.
“When we get that, we’re going to be a very powerful club.” – Agencies

  • Yes ya, Mead em png yah. Broncos you need Mead to lead in the backline spark missing in the last season. Mead with his experiences will provide gaps in the backline.

  • David is an experienced player in nrl and showed some effective movement in the back line row when in goldcost titans. I think he would be a capable player in backline row for brisbane broncos playing along side with his brother coates. All the best in your carrier. Support blo png em bai stp wantaim you twopla.

  • Broncos, bring him back home where he started. All the Broncos fans and supporters up here would love to see David run out again in the top league in the world. Go the Broncs, Go David.

  • It will be an awesome news for Mead to be signed by the Broncos. Two PNGeans on the flanks for the Broncos will be great sight to watch.

  • PNG is forever a QLD diehard In Australian Rugby League, our support will be meaningful watching Mead (kumul) playing alongside Coates (kumul) in 2021 NRL for Brisbane.
