BRISBANE Bronco David Mead has accepted a A$1,500 (K4,100) fine for contrary conduct for his involvement in a melee in Saturday’s 34-16 upset win over the Sydney Roosters.
The Central native reacted to Roosters enforcer Victor Radley’s dangerous contact on fellow Papua New Guinea-born Broncos winger Xavier Coates in the 68th minute at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
New South Welshman Radley, 23, was sin-binned twice and reported four times in what may cost him a few National Rugby League (NRL) matches on the sidelines and the chance of a debut Origin appearance.
Speaking to The National after Brisbane’s third win of the season, Mead — who is free to face the Storm on Thursday night (7.50pm kick-off) after accepting the fine — condemned Radley’s “cheap shot” on 20-year-old Coates.
“I thought it was a cheap shot by Radley and not fair on Xavier,” the winger said.
“I think the new rule is good because players will now be very careful about high tackles.
“The sin bins, however, seem to be frustrating for the fans.”
Meanwhile, according to NRL.com, teenage back-rower Teui Robati could become Brisbane’s second debutant in as many weeks.
The 19-year-old is in the frame for his NRL debut after serving as 18th man in Saturday’s win and is vying with fellow rising teen Brendan Piakura and hooker Danny Levi for a spot to face the visiting Storm.
Mead said he was confident that New Zealand-born Robati could handle the step up to the NRL after seeing his form first hand at Queensland Intrust Super Cup club Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
“I’m not sure what Kev (coach Kevin Walters) will do with the team yet,” he said.
“But if Robati gets his chance, I’ve played with him at Wynnum for two games there and I really like him.
“He is young and really energetic, he plays with heart and he plays tough.
“So if he does get an opportunity, I’m sure he will make the most of it.”
