PAPUA New Guinea Kumul David Mead bade farewell to countryman and Broncos teammate Xavier Coates who would be joining minor premiers Melbourne Storm for next season in Australia’s National Rugby League.
The Kevin Walters-coached Broncos played their last game of the season and recorded a 35-22 win over the Newcastle Knights at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.
Broncos captain and New Zealand international Alex Glenn, who had announced his retirement earlier this year, also played his last game of his 13-year league career.
Former Catalans Dragon and Gold Coast Titan Mead told The National after the game that he enjoyed playing alongside Coates and Glenn.
“I enjoyed playing alongside Xavier this year and got to know him,” he said.
“Xavier is a great young man with a big future ahead of him.
“He is like a little brother to me and I’m going to miss him.
“It was good to play the final game with him and get the win.”
The Tubusereia native, from Central, said Glenn was a role model on and off the field.
“Alex is one of the best guys I’ve met,” Mead said.
“He puts his family first and he is professional in everything he does.
“He is a great role model for his community and the game.”
Meanwhile, Mead thanked Broncos fans for backing the side despite their poor campaign, in which they finished 14th in the 16-team league.
“It has been a difficult year for everyone at the Broncos, especially our fans,” the 33-year-old said.
“They have been loyal and supportive throughout the season.
“But one of the good things was that we had plenty of players who had a taste of first grade this season.
“The experience will definitely help them from next season.”
