ELEVEN students took part in a media literacy training last Saturday in Port Moresby to learn about the social media environment.
Under the guidance of Rosa Koian, the training aimed at equipping the students with digital skills for online navigation and to give them practical experience.
The training was divided into four sessions where it began with nuances and preferences of social media.
This set up a detailed examination of the internet where the students had been taught on how social media worked and what people preferred to do in these platforms in session one.
In session two, participants discussed openly about the need to combat online bullying and how it could affect their emotions. Some of the students mentioned that it could lead to intense sadness and even thoughts of self-harm.
St Charles Lwanga Secondary School Grade 11 student Maxwell Xhanbegagu emphasised it was important to understand and deal with the risks of online bullying.
Session three discussed the potential use of social media as a learning tool and how it could create new business opportunities and foster intellectual growth.
Koian stressed on how to use social media properly and take full advantage of its potential.
The last session was on goal setting where students were encouraged to express their life goals, focusing on immediate, short-term and long-term aspirations and steering clear of digital distractions.
“There’s still more to come, be ready to do good things in your communities.
“You’re more than just mobile phones, you have the skills so use them for positive change,” Koian said.
