Medical scientists’ society calls for support

MEDICAL scientists play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases at hospitals but their total number in the country is unknown, an official says.
Papua New Guinea Medical Scientist Society president Gairo Gerega said the society was established in 2016 and they had just finalised its constitution.
He said once the constitution was approved by the PNG Medical Society scientists, they could subscribe to and become members.
Gerega, who is a lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea’s school of medicine and health sciences (SMHS), said around 30 students graduated annually from the school’s bachelor of medical laboratory science programme.
He said the society was a platform where medical scientists, regardless of where they work – in private or government hospitals and other laboratories – could get together, share their knowledge and learn from each other.
Following the post-symposium speciality conference which was held at the medical school, Sesago Healthcare Ltd sponsored the society’s dinner last Thursday.
Gerega said the medical scientists were grateful for the sponsorship.
“We tried to look for sponsors and Sesago came good,” he said.
“Sesago has been our major sponsor this year.
“We have other sponsors and we are also thankful for their support.”
Sesago sales and marketing manager Pradeep Panda said it was a privilege for the healthcare company to partner with the society.
He said they would continue to support the society.
“We will be actively participating in all the activities that you will be having,” he said.
“We would like to support the society in the best possible way we can because it is not just about buying and selling products.”
Panda urged the medical scientist society to inform them of their activities that together they could improve the quality of healthcare in the country.
Sesago was the bronze sponsor of this year’s medical symposium.
