WITH the Melbourne Cup just eight days away, one bookmaking company in Port Moresby has already begun preparations for the A$7.3 million (K17.3 million) ‘race that stops a nation’.
“If you’ve watched to the Melbourne Cup, you’ll wonder why everyone calls it ‘the race that stops a nation’,” Pacific Racing and Sports Betting manager Peter McCoy said of the 3200m race.
“It’s an opportunity try your luck by placing a bet on a winner and cheer your favourite horse on.”
“This prominent race places extraordinary demands on the horses, and bestows exceptional glory upon the winners.
“In addition, to the huge Australian audience that drop everything each November to follow the race, the Melbourne Cup has also captured the imaginations of countless international racing fans worldwide, including Papua New Guinea.
“Whether you back the favourite, make your pick by horse name, colour or number, you’ll have a great time.”
McCoy said the company had a variety of betting options available for the race, where the winning horse takes home $A4 million (K9.5 million).
“There is a multitude of betting options for the Melbourne Cup, from simple wins to trifectas (pick the first three horses), which can yield big dividends for a small investment.
“Pacific Racing and Sports Betting will have betting available on Sunday, Monday and Melbourne Cup day. If your horse is scratched on these days, you will get your money back.
“Doors will open at 7.30am on Tuesday for those people going to work.
“Betting limits of K100,000 for win bets and K60,000 for exotic bets.
“The Melbourne Cup excitement has just started.”
