The 2013 Mendi rugby union is about to kick off their preseason with the Mendi Rookies 7s.
Aspiring young players in the Mendi Town area are asked to sign up now to play in the newly established Mendi Rugby Union.
Mendi RFU president, Robin Asok said the association had already received a number of enquiries about registering to play in the Mendi Rookies 7s competition.
“The interest in rugby union in Mendi has grown after a product of Mendi RFU, Wesley Vali was selected to represent the country and we are now getting more and more enquiries about joining the association this year,” Asok said.
“There’s a lot of interest from parents and younger kids wanting to know how they can get involved in the code, which is a good sign.
“We have seven days before the start of the sevens competition on February 9 and we’re anticipating a good turnout and plenty of new faces joining our association.”
The Mendi RFU is one of the many rugby unions in the country.
Asok thanked Construct Oceanic Ltd managing director Sape Molumi for sponsoring the Mendi RFU with a set of jerseys worth K6,300.
Apart from playing in the Rookies 7s, Asok said there was going to be a selection to represent the Mendi RFU in the upcoming Trans Highway 7s and PNGRFU 7s circuit and there’s going to be prizes won at the end of the sixth weekend, on March 23.
